The first noted improver of this breed was William Anson of Christoval, Texas. He collected a band of stallions and mares of a high quality and concentrated bloodlines that were useful either in racing or for ranch work. Another noted breeder was W.T.Waggoner of Vernon, Texas. He collected the fastest short-distance species in an attempt to produce the fastest possible foals. Many ranchers or persons interested in equine sports have contributed to the development of the breed since the 16th century.
