Breeders and owners have a lot of questions concerning health issues of American Quarter Horses. It is recommended to contact veterinary clinics for help. However, some issues can be clarified provided the owner is aware of common diseases and care steps.
American Quarter Horse Broodmares should be supplied with necessary conditions when giving birth to foals. It is not recommended to place them in unknown surroundings. This is likely to slow down the time of foaling. The mare should also be familiarized with the night attendant a few days prior to planned delivery time. Take care of the conditions where the process is going to take place. It should be dry and clean.
Horse influenza is extremely common in horses. The disease is very contagious with peaks occurring in March through October. Coughing, watery discharge from the nostrils, fever, and depression are common signs of flu.
Most adult American Quarter Horses do not need any treatment. They are going to be OK on the condition they are free from strenuous activities and have a good supply of food and fresh water. As for the juvenile, they should receive a great deal of care since they are likely to develop secondary bacterial pneumonia. This will require hospital treatment.
Special medication appears to bring little effect. Antibodies have proved to be unsuccessful in managing flu viruses. It is worthwhile vaccinating American Quarter Horses. Despite all rumors about non-effective vaccines for horse influenza, this is likely to lessen a chance of disease occurrence in American Quarter Horses during seasonal outbreaks.
