American Quarter Horses - History
American Quarter Horses originated as a cross between the Arab, Barb, and Turk breeds that came to North and South America with Spanish explorers and trade men. Breeders used the best breeding stock for the new horse breed. They crossed the best stallions that took their roots in England and Ireland and the horses brought by the Spanish. Quality bloodlines were a good basis for the new breed. Such brilliant horses as the Thoroughbred and Irish Hobby contributed much to the qualities of the American Quarter Horse.
A compact, well-muscled horse was the end result of these crosses. It was capable of working all day long with a heavy saddle and a man on the back. Moreover, the horse could run as long as a quarter a mile at a great speed. The horse was the fastest one to cover such a distance and was often used as a racing horse. Due to its physical qualities and the country of origin, the new breed was named the American Quarter Horse.
In the 1800s, people started to move westward bringing their American Quarter Horses along. The horse turned out to be well adjusted for the plains of the West. Its endurance and strength earned the American Quarter Horse respect and fame. Besides, the American Quarter Horse became known as a good cattle roundup. The breed was also good as a trail driving horse.
The American Quarter Horse is an outstanding breed. Racing enthusiasts have always valued its qualities. However, with the development of railroads, the breed was likely to lose most of the working qualities. This did not happen thanks to the American Quarter Horse Association that took care of the welfare of the breed. Nowadays, American Quarter Horses are promoted by a great number of clubs and associations both in the United States and worldwide.
