American Quarter Horses are smaller in size than many other horses, but they are distinctively sturdy and agile, and second to none in speed. They stand no more than 15 hands tall and feature very muscular hindquarters. That’s why they are mostly pictured from behind. These horses arrived in America in the 17th century with first English colonists. They carry the genes of Arab, Turk and Barb breeds, and also have the genes of some Irish and English breeds. They were used in quarter-mile racing competitions, a very popular entertainment in the Wild West.
