As settlers moved westward, their horses crossbred with local species: feral Mustangs and horses developed by Native Americans. They were the descendants of the Arab, Barb and Turk mounts brought to America by Spanish conquistadors several centuries earlier. Such crosses resulted in compact and muscular equines. They were used almost for any task from pulling logs and working cattle to racing and pleasure riding.
